Shirts for
Little Characters (TM) (see more
graphics) ---
A real tiger, Clare (seen below at two years old) doesn't miss
much, including noticing Chinese characters or, as she calls
them, "Chinese words." Five familiar ones, since they
are on her Shirts for Little Characters -TM, are the following.
Please e-mail for more info on
shirt availability, ordering.
 |
Hu3,
tiger (sounds like "who." 3 indicates the
third tone, a falling, then rising inflection.). The tiger is
the legendary protector of children. |
Long2,
dragon (second tone, a rising inflection). The dragon,
in Chinese legend, is the embodiment of power and creativity. |
Xixi3,
double happiness (sounds
like "si-si," like 'sit' with no 't'. Third tone.). Festive character, traditional
at weddings. |
Xiao3
bao3 bei4, little
darling (sounds like "shao
pao pay." Fourth tone is a falling inflection.) This is
often heard when in public with a small child in China. |
On each shirt, the character is identified
beneath in English.
|
Feng4 huang2,
phoenix (sounds
like "fung whung." Fourth, then second tone.). The
phoenix is associated with the Empress
and with loyaly, justice and high principle. In Chinese legend
(and that of Egypt, Greece and some other cultures), it is a
symbol of renewal and rebirth. |
